ID-Backs in Memory of Brandon Pfaadt

The Diamondbacks will remember Brandon Pfaadt to start tomorrow’s game against the Giants, manager Torey Lovullo told the media (including Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports). The Serpents have been active with nine bulls and will have to select a pitcher to make room on the active roster.

Pfadt will likely rejoin the rotation for the first time since April. He opened the season with the first five of the season Merrill Kelly he was on the injured list. Pfaadt was hit hard in his first three starts and moved to the bullpen when Kelly returned. Michael Sorokawho is expected to play freely for a long time, played well past Pfaadt in the beginning.

The ID-Backs rolled with turns including Kelly, Zac Gallen, Eduardo RodriguezSoroka once Ryne Nelson temporarily. Fadt spent six weeks in the bullpen before Arizona optioned him to Triple-A to begin a rebuild as a starter. It wasn’t long before Soroka and Nelson went down injured one after the other. Soroka (left glute) could be back in late July, but Nelson is a little sore and will likely be out in September.

Right-handed rookie Jose Cabrera it took one of those abandoned orbits. The Southpaw Mitch Bratt made first base in his MLB debut last week. Bratt was just coming back from an injury in the minors and was on a pitching limitation, so he only went three innings. The D-Backs opted him out the next day.

Pfadt was not ready to rediscover the exchange at that time. He has yet to complete four full innings over 3 starts at Triple-A Reno. The righty pitched very well in his minor league debut, however, working 10 innings of three-run ball with seven strikeouts and two walks. He has an earned run average close to 6.00 in 38 major league frames this season.

The Diamondbacks took the first game of the series tonight after another strong start by Rodriguez. (They are now 7-0 against the Giants this season.) They fell to 42-42 after a weekend sweep by the Rays dropped them below .500 for the first time in six weeks. Arizona is 2.5 games out of a tight NL Wild Card picture. General manager Mike Hazen said they are hoping to make an acquisition, pointing to a left-handed bat and relief pitcher as potential targets. In early June, Hazen downplayed the need to add a starter, but that preceded injuries to Nelson and Soroka.
