Jovic scored 19 Christian winners 12 and he won 44 percentage of return points, creating seven break opportunities and converting three. He was good at netting, winning 10 his 12 methods.

Christian did 58 the first percentage he served and won 82 percentage of those points, but struggled after his second serve, allowing Jovic to dominate the rallies as the match wore on.

The victory sends the sixteenth seed into the second round of Wimbledon for the first time.

Fellow American Jessica Pegula, seeded fourth, who also advanced to the second round, was asked about Jovic in her post-match press conference.

He is a great player, I think he is very good. I practiced with him a bit. Then I just remember watching him play in Australia. I don’t know if I had any idea where his game was going to be.

I think he went out for a night game and just destroyed someone. You could just see him on his face, as if he meant business every time he went out. I think that is very unusual. You don’t often see that in someone so young.

I remember watching that show, and I was like, ‘This girl is going to be really good.’ You hear it. I think you know it when you see someone playing. I feel like you had a good year last year, and I think you’ve proven yourself to be at a high level-20 player.”
