Astros To Place Jeremy Peña On Injured List

The Astros are pitching Jeremy Peña on the 10-day injured list because of a left calf strain, manager Joe Espada told reporters (including Chandler Rome of The Athletic). The club hopes that it will not be.
Peña reported discomfort in his left leg and sat out the loss of the twins for the night. He will obviously need at least a week and a half to rehabilitate the injury even if the Astros have underestimated the intensity. The All-Star break is two weeks from now, so the club can play it safe and keep him on the sidelines until then. Their final series before the break is a big one, however, as they head to Arlington for a three-game set against the division-leading Rangers from June 10-12.
This is Peña’s second IL of the season. Right hamstring strain cost him more than a month between April and May. Peña also played through a broken finger, which he suffered while leading off the World Baseball Classic, to start the season. He played well when healthy, hitting .295/.356/.443 while anchoring the infield defensively.
Nick Allen he just got back from his residency in IL and got the nod at shortstop tonight. He’ll probably make the starting lineup by now. Allen won’t contribute offensively but he has a very good glove. Houston is selected Raynel Delgado as a corresponding move to activate Allen on the injured list. They will likely move him back as an extra point guard, at least until Braden Shewmake ready to return from the adductor problem that cost him all of June.
