President Donald Trump on Sunday called Washington, DC, council member Janeese Lewis George a “communist” and vowed to block policies he said would undermine public safety and reverse his administration’s efforts to reduce crime in the nation’s capital.

In a lengthy Truth Social letter, Trump said he plans to meet with Lewis George and said Washington is safer under his administration. He also pledged to oppose any plan that he said would weaken immigration enforcement, police or the city’s criminal justice system.

“Janeese Lewis George, a Communist will likely be elected Mayor of Washington, DC, has said she wants to empty the prisons, make DC a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens back to our beloved Capital, oppose Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, “destroy ‘Social Bail'” and much more.

“In the end, it’s not going to work, and I’m not going to let it even have a chance because I’ve worked so hard to make Washington, DC, the Evy of the World, almost no crime, and a decorum process that didn’t work,” continued Trump. “I will meet with Janeese Lewis George, but I must warn everyone that Washington, DC, is now a safe and respectful community.

“Many people, including myself, have worked long and hard to get there, and we will not allow it to be destroyed by a communist who has no intention, TO MAKE WASHINGTON AGAIN!” he added.

Lewis George, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist and member of the District of Columbia Council, defeated McDuffie of Kenya and five other Democratic mayoral candidates earlier this month, putting him in the position of succeeding Mayor Muriel Bowser in a city where Democrats dominate the general election.

His primary victory sets the stage for a possible showdown with Trump, who has made reducing crime in Washington and reshaping the nation’s capital a priority of his second term. The President is still present in the National Guard in this city and has threatened again that he will completely abolish local law in the District if he believes that the local leaders are failing to control crime.

Lewis George has strongly criticized Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and increased law enforcement presence in Washington. After the president’s decision to deploy the Guard last year, he called the move a “direct attack” on the city’s residents and accused Trump of using the Home Rule Act.

During the mayoral campaign, Lewis George pointed out that “federal troops” and “undercover ICE agents” pose a greater threat to young Washington residents than juvenile delinquency and he argued against relying on home detention and federal law enforcement, instead advocating for expanded youth programs and other public investments.

“I’m not going to like it — and maybe we’re going to take Washington back, run it on a federal basis,” Trump told reporters earlier this month. “We will not tolerate it. We will not lose our businesses.”
