Starter: Miller, Padres, Holmes

Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing it will be behind the plate Shohei Ohtani tonight. The two have struggled to get on the same page in Ohtani’s recent starts. “Dalton understands that this is what he signed up for,” manager Dave Roberts told reporters (h/t Alden Gonzalez of ESPN).
1. Miller reigns again
Mariners right Bryce Miller pitched six innings Thursday against the Angels. First baseman Nolan Schanuel broke the no-hitter bid with a bloop single to lead off the seventh inning. “I would have chosen about 120 [mph] line drive,” Miller said (h/t Daniel Kramer of MLB.com).I feel like they didn’t really earn those two hits. But it’s okay. They fall apart sometimes.” Miller allowed another hit Denzer Guzmanbut he got out of the jam. He lowered his ERA to 1.71 in nine appearances. Miller has an impressive 62:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio since returning from an oblique injury.
2. The watchers let the 12 go unanswered
San Diego jumped out to a 6-0 lead against the Dodgers on Thursday. Manny Machado, Jackson Merrillagain Jake Cronenworth they all came out Roki Sasaki in the first two frames. Los Angeles came out early, scoring runs in each of the second through fifth innings. The consistent rallies led to a dozen straight runs for the Dodgers. The Padres have now allowed 35 runs in the past two days. They allowed a franchise-record 65 runs in a six-game stretch (h/t Dennis Lin of The Athletic). With six straight losses, San Diego fell back to .500 and tied with the Diamondbacks for second place in the NL West.
3. Holmes will rejoin the rotation temporarily
The Braves will provide the right hand Grant Holmes starting on Friday after taking him to the barn. The move comes after the club opted to jump right in Bryce Elder in circulation. The senior felt off the pace in his last start. He allowed 24 earned runs in 26 2/3 innings last month. Atlanta often shuffles a rotation that doesn’t exist Spencer Strider again Spencer Schwellenbach. Reynaldo Lopez again Hurston Waldrep are back in the mix. Carlos Carrasco again JR Ritchie They have been going up and down the club. Holmes went five innings just once in four June starts, so the team shifted him to a longer relief role. He pitched four scoreless innings in his first game out of the bullpen.
