Giants Outright Wilkin Ramos – MLB Trade Rumors

The Giants sent a right-hander Wilkin Ramos straight to Triple-A Sacramento, according to his trade tracker on MLB.com. This indicates that he withdrew the waiver after being appointed to the job last week.

Ramos, 25, had his contract optioned by San Francisco in June. It was his first major league roster spot. That means this is his first straight job and he’s not even close to three years of major league service time. Therefore, he does not have the right to choose free will.

Presumably, the Giants are happy with that result. They signed Ramos to a minor league deal in the offseason. He started the season in Triple-A and got off to a hot start. By the end of May, he had thrown 27 innings allowing six earned runs, giving him a flat 2.00 ERA. His 23.5% strikeout rate and 6.1% walk rate were both better than average, while his 61.4% ground ball rate was nearly 20 ticks above par.

The Giants were impressed enough to give him a roster spot on the first day of June, even though his first MLB tryout was unsuccessful. In his first appearance, he allowed two earned runs in two innings. In the second, he faced four batters and all reached. Three of them came in hits, beating Ramos’ ERA to 22.50. He was then optioned back to Triple-A and allowed nine earned runs in 5 2/3 innings before being designated for assignment.

While it’s clear that June was not a good month for Ramos, he showed early promise to prove himself as a major league arm before then. The Giants can keep him around without using a roster spot and see if he gets back on track.
