Google AI Mode Shows Ads For 1 Of 3 Marketing Keywords

Google AI Mode returned a text ad for 29% of marketing keywords in the new SE Ranking analysis, and for most of those keywords the advertiser’s domain was not among the sources the answer indicated.

SE Ranking checked whether the pages or domains for each keyword that generated the text ad also appeared from sources listed in AI Mode for the same query. The domain was there 11% of the time, while the exact URL appeared 1.95% of the time. In the remaining cases, the paid ad advertiser was not among the sources specified for the AI mode.

Ad Frequency Rose With CPC

Ad frequency correlates more closely with cost per click than any other SE Ranking Factor tested. The CPC rate increased across all three bands: 24% under $2, 32.45% from $2 to $10, and 53.56% at $10 and above. Search volume and keyword difficulty did not show similar patterns. Since the report does not provide model or sample sizes for each band, this shows the correlation of the data, not a confirmed prediction.

Ad Presence Swings Big in Niche

Ad presence varies by niche, dropping from 72% for pet keywords to 2% for Healthcare. SE Ranking interprets the categories with the highest ad presence as lead generation and those with the lowest presence as informational or YMYL-focused. Therefore, the advertising power of an account depends on its category before considering any specific keywords.

Many Advertisers Haven’t Been Organic Too

Advertisers rarely appear in organic search results for keywords they have paid for. Only 2% of paid URLs are also ranked organically for the same keyword, and 15.35% at the domain level.

Part of the gap in URL results from campaign landing pages is not intended to scale, but the domain level gap continues within the top 10, 20, and 100 ranks. SE Ranking also compared advertising and non-advertising sites associated with authority and organic presence, finding no increase in advertisers’ citations, although the information provided is limited to verification.

The Ad Layer Google Keeps Building

Google has gradually added ads to AI Mode. During Google Marketing Live, the company introduced two AI-mode ad formats: Conversational Discovery Ads and Featured Answers, both embedded within AI answers. These are still being tested and are not widely available yet.

This follows an annual letter from Vidhya Srinivasan, which points to the expansion of AI Mode ads in 2026. Google also said that AI Overview ads earn the same revenue as regular search ads.

Why This Matters

AI mode ads are independent, with data showing that ad placements, citations, and organic rankings are often not aligned with the same keyword. Buying a site does not guarantee quotes or rankings, so treat this as a separate paid channel, especially for high CPC keywords.

The overlap between ads and quotes is helpful for visibility, not direct purchase. Remember, the opponent from the AI mode is not identified as the source, as this usually does not happen at the same time. Monitor payment and quote availability separately.

Looking Forward

Currently, paid ads and citation information are very different, so you can track them separately. Google is experimenting with new formats like Conversation Discovery ads and Featured Answers, where the ad is part of the answer itself, instead of being displayed next to it. If these new formats become more common, the line between purchasing a property and appearing in a response may begin to blur.

SE Ranking sells AI Mode and competitor ad tracking. The keywords are pre-selected to trigger text ads and are sampled equally across all niches, so 29% show this test set on one date, not an increase in ads across all commercial searches.
