Here’s What All Those Android Status Bar Icons Mean

There is a lot of information packed into the top area of the Android phone screen

That patch on the top of your Android phone is full of information. With a little training, you should be able to quickly figure out what your phone is trying to tell you about network, calls, battery and more. If you want to be efficient, you need to understand what all (or most) of those symptoms mean so you don’t get confused and spend 20 minutes troubleshooting a problem that doesn’t really exist.

The little icons at the top of your screen fall into roughly five categories: network, battery, device status, audio, and call. You’ll find these icons in the status bar on the right, while notifications from specific apps are grouped on the left. Although the shape of the icons may vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, they will be more similar than different. But it’s worth remembering that many Android manufacturers change the appearance of the phone a little, so things will be a little different for your particular device. Let’s break things down and help you find the most common Android status bar icons by category so you always know what your phone is trying to tell you.

What do Android connection icons mean?

One of the things you’ll notice immediately when you look at your phone, even if you look at the clock on the lock screen, is your phone’s network status. Some of them will appear even in the restricted view, while others will fill the space when you expand the top panel.

  • Wi-Fi — A wedge shape with curved lines indicates a connection to a Wi-Fi network. If you see solid lines, the signal is strong. If you see an exclamation mark next to it, it means that you are connected to the local network, but you do not have access to the Internet. If there’s an X next to it, you don’t have internet access at all.

  • Cellular signal – If you see a series of vertical bars, those represent the strength of your cellular network.
    • 5G, LTE, 4G, or 3G — These will appear next to your signal lines and show your current data speed.

    • R next to the bars indicates that your phone is “roaming” and connected to a network outside the carrier’s area, so additional charges may apply.

  • Airplane mode — If you see the airplane icon, that means you’ve entered this mode where all wireless connections (cell phones, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth) are turned off.

  • Bluetooth — A sharp, B-like symbol appears when Bluetooth is turned on and you can connect to a phone.

  • Two incomplete circles with a dot in between — Your phone is a Wi-Fi hotspot and other devices can connect to share your data.

  • IN with a double center dash — The NFC feature is on and you can use your phone to pay, for example.

What do the battery and power icons show?

Also available on the right side of the screen, you will find icons that tell you a story about your phone’s battery status.

  • Vertical or horizontal battery frame — The filled part shows the remaining power.
    • A lightning bolt in or near the battery icon — This means your phone is connected and charging.

    • Battery saver — The battery icon may turn a warning color such as orange, red, or yellow, indicating that background activity is limited to save power.

What does the device mean and display modes?

Not only are the connection icons displayed in the status bar, but also those that tell you information about the device’s status and methods.

  • Teardrop-shaped map pin — This icon tells you that you have your GPS active and an app like Google Maps or Waze may be using that data.,.

  • Clock — A small alarm clock icon tells you that there is an active alarm scheduled.

  • A solid circle with a horizontal dash in the center — This indicates when do not disturb mode is on. All your calls and notifications are silenced.

  • Speaker icon with a line drawn on it — Your phone is on Silent so your alarm doesn’t sound.

What do Android call icons mean?

Your phone’s status bar will also display information about calls and texts.

  • Phone handset — This symbol indicates that there is a call in progress.

  • Phone handset with a broken arrow — You missed at least one call.

  • Microphone off — Your microphone is muted.

  • The speakerphone is on.

What other icons are there on Android phones?

You’ll find a ton of other icons appearing on the left side of the status bar — those are notifications for specific apps. Every app you’ve installed that you’ve turned notifications on can show an icon there. Whether it’s Facebook telling you there’s a new post from a friend, a news app telling you about something that happened, a text from a friend or your security camera telling you it detected motion, the icon will appear there.

There are also icons that tell you when you’re downloading an app or file, show when the download is complete, if there’s a system update you need to install, and more. Since most people have multiple apps, all the notification icons probably won’t fit in that small space, so you’ll have to swipe down and go through each notification individually. Android’s status bar is a small but powerful feature — one that, when understood, gives you a quick insight into what your device is doing at any given moment. The better you read your profile, the more control you have over your device.
