President Donald Trump announced a last-minute cancellation of the signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act on Wednesday, ruling out the passage of the SAVE Act.

“Today’s House Meeting and Signing are canceled until such time as we pass the necessary SAVE AMERICA ACT legislation, which I consider a national emergency. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

House lawmakers passed the Housing Act by a vote of 358-32 on Tuesday, showing widespread agreement on the need to help Americans facing housing affordability challenges. The bill aims to increase housing supply and will lower costs while also giving individual buyers a leg up by preventing large institutional investors from buying single-family homes.

Earlier Wednesday morning, Trump called the move an “Elizabeth ‘Pocahontas’ Warren centric housing bill,” writing that it “pales in comparison to low interest rates, and FISA itself, pales in comparison to passing the SAVE AMERICA ACT.”

The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act includes Trump’s long-sought ID and citizenship verification as expected in the midterms.

Trump and administration officials have touted the importance of passing the SAVE America Act, which has faced setbacks and backlash.

“That’s what the American people, both Dumocrats, Republicans, and everyone else, care about. Get the damn Republicans to agree or, better yet, End the Filibuster and allow it, AND EVERYTHING ELSE REPUBLICANS HAVE EVER DREAMED OF,” Trump said on Truth Social. “The Democrats will do it in the first hour, 100%. The Republicans will feel stupid if they don’t do it first. I’ll be watching with tears in my eyes!!!”

The housing package comes after months of House and Senate debate over restrictions on private investors and a temporary ban on central bank derivatives (CBDCs), an unrelated proposal pushed by GOP privacy advocates.

The bill would loosen regulations surrounding factory-built housing and facilitate housing association environmental reviews.

The move encourages local governments to review zoning policies to support more housing and address housing shortages.

Many Americans have struggled when it comes to buying a home, with the national median price reaching $400,000, according to Realtor.com.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday the new law will restore the “American Dream” and thanked Republican and Democratic members after the bill was passed.

“Thank you to Chairman Hill, the High Representative, and our colleagues in the Senate for rolling up their sleeves to negotiate and execute this bipartisan, bicameral bill that will now head to President Trump’s desk to be signed into law,” he wrote in X.
