At the very core of the American project has always been a strong defiance of distant powers, a stubborn resistance to those who seek to undermine our right to self-government or impose their will on a people willing to determine their own destiny.

This spirit not only made America exist but is essential for our nation to maintain its sovereignty in the future.

America once again defied those who would undermine our right to self-government on July 13 when Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the Trump administration would “dismantle” the International Court of Justice and teach them “the full meaning of American determination.”

This will include diplomatic pressure on nations that cooperate with US law enforcement or our military and enjoy the benefits of our protection, working with allies to join us in rejecting the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC), sanctions against the ICC and its affiliates, and visa bans for ICC staff. I have pursued similar policies by law, including the ” ICC Out of NYC law ,” legislation that would prevent United Nations buildings in New York City from being used, rented or occupied by ICC representatives or staff.

The ICC, however, remains confident of its ability to pierce the veil of American sovereignty and wage law against American citizens, soldiers and civil servants alike. A world court that attempts to exercise such jurisdiction — over and above the authority of any nation — poses a direct and serious threat to the continued sovereignty of the United States that will no longer be tolerated.

As Americans, we wholeheartedly reject the idea that a governing body, especially one created by law that has never been ratified by our country, has legal authority over our citizens and our leaders. The US Constitution is our law and guide and no other.

Abandoning the legal authority of the United States government to an unaccountable international organization would be tantamount to betraying the American people – and usurping our right to self-government.

An active and courageous ICC means that American sovereignty depends on the will of a global organization run by those who have never run for office before the American people, who have never represented American interests, and who have never sworn allegiance to the American Constitution. No self-respecting nation, not one founded on a far-reaching revolution, would allow unelected globalists to use unbridled force against its citizens, soldiers and leaders.

The United States has worked to limit the ICC for decades, with presidents of both parties warning of the threat the court poses to American sovereignty. No president, from Bill Clinton to George W. Bush to Barack Obama, has agreed to ratify the Rome Statute, which would place American sovereignty in the hands of global elites empowered to air their political grievances in the language of unenforceable international law.

But despite the reluctance of previous presidents to fully legitimize the court, none were willing to take decisive action to prevent the grave abuses of sovereignty that the ICC is still capable of today. Strong enough measures are not enough to fight and protect American sovereignty.

As Americans, we wholeheartedly reject the idea that a governing body, especially one created by law that has never been ratified by our country, has legal authority over our citizens and our leaders. The US Constitution is our law and guide and no other.

Only President Donald Trump shows the courage to take drastic measures against the powers of the ICC, which is necessary to ensure that American citizens and workers never face the courts, so elected American leaders are never threatened with arrest for acting in accordance with the interest of our country.

No nation is truly independent if it allows an unaccountable court to sit above it and claim power over its people and elected officials. Meeker states may be content to give veto power over their foreign and domestic policy to an unaccountable supreme body, but such an apparent departure from national sovereignty is completely contrary to American culture, mind and spirit.

That is why the Trump administration is ready to take over the ICC and ensure that it never has the power to threaten the United States and its people.
