Tuesday’s schedule will include a day game after Cleveland and Cincinnati were washed out last night. Clubs will suit up in a day/night double header starting in the afternoon.
1. Marlins losing streak
If you have lost 12 games in a row, John Duran he’s not the one you want to see on the mound in the ninth inning. Miami wasn’t intimidated by the All-Star closer. Five straight Marlins reached base to erase a two-run deficit in the ninth inning Monday. The one who plays outside The Griffin Conine finished the game with one hit. It was Miami’s first win since July 9. The club fell out of the final NL Wild Card spot, but sits just two games behind the Pirates and Diamondbacks. The problem is that the Nationals, Cardinals, and Padres are also ahead of the Marlins in the crowded NL.
2. The Pirates outscore the D-Backs
Pittsburgh and Arizona are now tied for the final playoff bid in the National League after that Brandon Lowe sent fans home happy on Monday. The second baseman scored the tying run in the eighth inning, then singled up the middle Billy Cook in the bottom of the 10th inning to win. The Diamondbacks have now dropped three games in a row after losing the series to the Nationals over the weekend. The club begins a critical road trip that includes the Rangers, Padres, and Dodgers after the series in Pittsburgh.
3. Scherzer returns to Washington
Veteran is right Max Scherzer he returned to his familiar mound on Monday. He faced the Nationals after missing six weeks with a back injury. Scherzer needed 75 pitches to get eight outs, but was able to limit the damage to one earned run. DC fans gave him a standing ovation when he took the mound and when he was pulled in the third inning. Scherzer won the World Series with the team in 2019. At 42 years old, the outing could be Washington’s last. “It’s special,” Scherzer said (h/t Shi Davidi of Sportsnet).I have a lot of good memories here in DC, so the fans, I wanted to show them respect because they were happy all the time, even when I was warming up.
