Rockies Designate John Brebbia for Assignment

The Rockies plan to pick John Brebbia for the assignment, reports Thomas Harding of MLB.com. In his place, they called a right-handed person Gabriel Hughes. Colorado protected Hughes from the Rule 5 draft by opting out of his contract last November, so the move will leave the team with a 40-man cap space.

Brebbia, now 36, was a traveler from the start. He spent time in the Yankees’ and Diamondbacks’ minor league programs, as well as two teams in the independent American Association, before finally making his MLB debut for the Cardinals in 2017. After spending many years in St. Louis and San Francisco, he has become a traveler again. Over the past three seasons, he has suited up for the White Sox, Braves, Tigers and Rockies. He also signed minor league contracts with the Red Sox and Twins.

The righty owns a respectable 4.12 ERA and 3.68 SIERA in 379 career games. However, he has struggled to keep runs on the board over the past three seasons, and his raw materials have dwindled. Assuming he clears waivers, his track record should earn him a new major league contract, but he will have to find a way back to the majors.
