I am a very intelligent man. It’s so weird, that I have an AirTag hanging from almost every camera I own. Did I leave my camera at Uber? Yes. Did I leave it on the plane? And yes. For me, finder tags are important to my cameras.
The problem is, tying a detection tag to a camera is always difficult. I currently have them hanging on camera walls as a 2001 phone charm. They’re ugly, and they really distract me when I’m trying to focus on photography. But Peak Design thinks it has a solution in its new Field Bracket system, which it launched today on Kickstarter, starting at $150 for early birds.
The Peak Design Field Bracket is part L-Bracket, part hand-held, part cheese plate. It is designed for photographers and videographers who want to quickly switch between landscape and portrait orientation on their tripod, or sometimes want to mount a light or microphone on their camera when there is no dedicated place to do so. But perhaps the most interesting thing, to me at least, is that the bracket comes with a dedicated Finder Tag slot.
Peak’s Beacon Finder Tag is a Peak Design branded finder that works with Apple Find My and Google Find Hub. That means it will work with both Apple and Android phones, so you don’t have to worry about losing access to your camera viewfinder if you switch ecosystems. The tag uses a standard CR2025 battery, and Peak says it’s rated to last 6 months. It’s rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, and fits snugly inside the L-bracket base plate.
The Beacon Finder Tag is one of the accessories Peak Design sells alongside the Field Bracket. The basic product you’ll buy is actually the L bracket, but once that’s on your camera, you’ll have access to other add-ons like hand grips, finger grips, and a cheese plate. Peak says the Field Bracket will work with most ARCA-compatible tripods, and won’t interfere when you use it with its shooting clip or camera straps. In fact, the bracket itself has dedicated slots for attaching your Peak Design camera strap, so you won’t have to sacrifice your strap to use the bracket.
Peak calls the L-bracket vertical attachment the Field Latch, and it uses the company’s new locking system to quickly attach and remove without any tools. This is the same place where you attach the optional cheese plate, which comes out of the adjustable stand in case you need to access ports or run cables from the camera.
Of course, you’ll have to choose the exact bracket you want on the camera you own, considering it’s molded directly to that body. At launch, most supported cameras are the newest, or closest models of each camera line. You can see the corresponding list here. The bracket itself will have an MSRP of $149.95, and if you want a bundle of all the accessories currently on offer, you can get the whole thing for $269.80. As always, Peak Design is offering a Kickstarter discount, putting the bracket at $125 and the bundle at $199, while supplies last.
