The Mariners have announced their infielder/outfielder Miles Mastrobuoni cleared waivers and was sent straight to Triple-A Tacoma. He has the right to choose free agency but the MLBTR has learned that he will accept the assignment.
Mastrobuoni has been a slow/deep hitter for many years now. In 208 big league games for the Rays, Cubs and Mariners, he has a .228/.293/.271 line. But he has 22 stolen bases and defensive experience at every position except for catcher and center field.
He completed his final year in 2025, leaving him with no future options this year. That gave him the opportunity to play but he faced difficulties playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic. He started the season on the injured list. He was reinstated in June but then reassigned a week later. He cleared waivers and stuck with the Mariners at the Triple-A level. That gave them an opportunity to put him on the early July roster there Julio Rodríguez hit the IL. Mastrobuoni was sent to DFA limbo again when Rodríguez returned a few days ago.
Since this is entirely secondary, Mastrobuoni would have preferred the open market. Instead, it looks like he will return to Tacoma and get playing time there as he waits for another chance in the big leagues.
