Steph Curry hoped LeBron James would end up in Golden State, but his calm reaction when James signed with the Philadelphia 76ers suggested he was prepared for a different outcome.
“That’s why you don’t wish for anything until it happens,” Curry said while speaking at Moses Moody’s youth camp. “There are a lot of moving parts.”
While Curry avoids expressing frustration publicly, Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic believes the Warriors star may be tired of continuing to pursue marquee names instead of building an existing roster.
“I think he’s probably tired of chasing stardom,” Thompson said as he left KNBR.
Golden State has spent the last few years chasing another superstar to match Curry.
The Warriors have Jimmy Butler in 2025, but have explored potential moves including LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown and Anthony Davis. None of those pursuits resulted in blockbuster hits.
Thompson believes Curry may now choose a different path.
“Give me young people who are willing and we’ll get to it,” Thompson said while thinking about Curry’s idea. “Let’s go Davidson’s way, shall we?” [Southern Conference] route. Just put together the best team.”
The four-time NBA champion admitted that Golden State’s priorities have changed following significant injuries to Butler and Moody.
“The whole equation of everything changes,” Curry said. “How do you go through when they’re not there but stay at a certain level? And then how does that fit into this year. It’s the same. So, I’m realistic about that.”
Curry also made it clear that he is focusing on reality rather than fiction.
He said: “We don’t live in a different place.
Thompson believes that repeating the cycle of waiting for another star has worn Curry down as he enters the final year of his contract.
“His championship hopes are completely tied up,” Thompson said. “And I think he’d really like it tied to him.”
