How to personalize the Screensaver on your Kindle

So, you’re tired of seeing rotating ads or preloaded Amazon graphics on your Kindle every time you put it to sleep. That’s understandable, especially if you’re an avid reader who’s been spending a lot of time on your reader. In this article, we will guide you how to change your Kindle sleep screen and how to customize it if you want.

How to remove Kindle specials

Versions with special offers or lock screen ads typically cost $20 less than versions without them. These devices will show you a rotation of book ads, on additional Kindle or Kindle Unlimited devices whenever you put your Kindle to sleep. As long as your device is ad-supported, you can’t customize your screensaver, so your first step is to remove Special Offers from your ereader, which will understandably cost you some money. If your Kindle doesn’t have lock screen ads, you can skip this step. But if it happens, you can follow these instructions:

1. On the desktop, go to the Amazon website, log in and click the hamburger menu on the left side of the screen.

  • Under Digital Content & Devices, go to Kindle E-readers & Books.
  • On the next screen, click Manage Content and Devices under Apps and devices.
  • On the new page that loads, click Devices near the top of the screen. If you have more than one Kindle attached to your account, click the box labeled Kindle under Amazon Devices and select the ereader you want.
  • In the Offers box below, you’ll find a button to remove the offer for $20. And, you’ll have to pay for it, because Amazon says the first $20 off you got was in exchange for getting ads.

2. On mobile, open the Amazon app.

  • Go to the “Alexa for Shopping” tab in the lower right corner of your screen.
  • Type “I want to set up Special Offers on my Kindle.” Alexa will link you to the Manage Devices page.
  • From there, select Kindle and scroll down to complete the Special Offer for $20.

NOTE: If you’re not in the US but somehow have a US-version Kindle, you may have problems removing lock screen ads. Amazon will ask you to add a US address and a US debit card so you can pay $20 for removal. Without both, it will not be possible to proceed to the next step. You can try talking to customer service and politely ask if they can disable the special offer for free, but there’s no guarantee that will work.

How to display book covers as your Kindle screensaver

Once you’ve turned off the lock screen ads, or if you never had them in the first place, you’ll get a rotation of images provided by Amazon as your screen saver. Those who own new Kindles have the option to use the cover of the book you’re currently reading (see below for a full list of supported models). To make sure this feature is enabled, follow these steps:

  • Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner of your Kindle.
  • Go to Device Options. Find the Display Cover and toggle it to On.
  • On new or updated devices, you will find the option “Show covers on the lock screen” in the “Screen and light” section. Just turn it on.

NOTE: The option to use book covers as screensavers is only available on the following models:

How to use custom images as your Kindle screensaver

Unfortunately, there is no way to use custom images as your Kindle screensaver permanently without jailbreaking your device. However, there is a trick you can consider: Changing the cover of the book with the image you want to see, then open it before turning off your device. Before you continue with the instructions below, make sure you’ve completed the steps above to toggle the option to show book covers as your lock screen.

  • The first step is to create custom wallpapers in programs like Canva or look for an image you want to use. Just make sure it fits the device you have by searching for the screen size of your ereader. The latest Kindle Paperwhite, for example, has a 7×5-inch display. Some people recommend creating a wallpaper that measures 2,560 x 1,600 pixels, which will work on most Kindle models.
  • After you’ve finished designing your custom graphic, download it as a PNG image.
  • Use a program like Caliber to convert any supported file (such as PDF) to an EPUB file. You’ll find an option to set your ebook cover on the dialog screen, so choose the PNG image you’ve created.
  • Also you can check “epub cover change” website online. Upload the book you’re reading or any EPUB you have and choose a PNG image you saved earlier for your new cover.
  • Use the “Send-to-Kindle” feature to upload the finished file to your reader.

NOTE: You’ll need to switch to a book that uses your custom cover before you put your device to sleep every time you want to see it on your lock screen. Alternatively, you can change the cover of every book you’ve read, although that sounds time-consuming, especially if you burn through books quickly. Although this solution is not very straightforward, it is an effective way to personalize your device.
