How the Open influenced Matthew Fitzpatrick’s putter change

A few months ago, Bettinardi released the BB1 Fitz Flow putter alongside the BB48 FITZ as offerings built to the standards of what Matthew Fitzpatrick has in the bag.
Fitzpatrick’s regular player, the BB1 FF, has been holding strong for “Team Blade” out there on Tour, and the BB48 model is a great offering for players looking for Fitz’s preferred face grind in a more forgiving way.
Well, yesterday, Bettinardi re-released the retail versions of both models, and we have the Open links criteria to thank for that.
Fitzpatrick’s regular BB1 FF putter had a smooth sole on it. While attending the Open, he first noticed that the putter was slipping on the hard and wispy greens overseas. This slippage caused an unreliable start to the putting stroke and led to a complete lack of confidence on the green. The good news? Bettinardi’s team had an easy fix.

What they did was add a milled honeycomb pattern to the bottom of the putter. This grinding helped the putter meet the putter and lock the putter in place when Fitzpatrick put it down behind the ball. His putter is of course produced from the Bettinardi HIVE and includes his own custom bumper stamp and Bettinardi Wizard solo.
What’s really good about this Fitzpatrick change is that Bettinardi has already brought in retail revenue. Since there’s no harm in installing a honeycomb pattern on its own, they’ve essentially changed the retail offering to come with stock and grilling. The retail grind is a little different than what Fitz has on Tour. It is almost identical to the honeycomb pattern you can see on Bettinardi’s Queen Bee series of putters.

Bettinardi Golf
It’s a lot of detail, but, as Fitzpatrick attests, one that can save a player from any discomfort on the putt no matter where his golf journey takes him.
