DepEd is piloting a P100 million competitive assistance program for students, teachers
The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday reviewed its P100.8-million financial assistance program to support students and teacher trainers, as it pushes Filipino talent to advance in national and international competitions.
“President Bongbong Marcos believes that no talent should be left behind just because of lack of support,” Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” M. Angara said in Filipino in a news release.
“We intend to ease the burden on our students and teacher trainers so that they can focus on honing their skills and bringing glory to the country,” he added.
Under the Government Assistance and Grants–Training and Knowledge Development for Students, Teachers, and Graduates of Schools (GAS-TUKLAS), students in public and private schools in elementary and high schools, including those enrolled in the DepEd-recognized Alternative Learning System (ALS), and teacher trainees can receive competitive financial assistance to cover competitive expenses.
Students and teacher trainers from low-income households will also be prioritized in this program.
Submitted applications will be reviewed and approved at the school, School Division Office, and District Office levels before final verification and approval by the DepEd Central Office through the Government Assistance and Subsidies Service (GASS).
The actual amount of the grant, which aims to cover registration costs, training and preparation costs, travel costs, boarding and lodging, is subject to allowable costs, competitive requirements, financial availability, and applicable government regulations.
Interested applicants are requested to submit the required documents at least 45 working days prior to joining DepEd-approved individual and team competitions in education, sports, arts and culture, and other competitions related to various fields.
A list of approved events will be posted on the agency’s official website from time to time.
DepEd said the implementation of its assessment for the 2026-2027 School Year aims to gather implementation data, policy information, and evidence of performance to refine program policies and future expansion “as a national support mechanism for students and teacher educators in all districts.”
Agreeing to support young Filipino talents, Senator Joseph Victor “JV” G. Ejercito earlier this month introduced a measure to support young Filipino athletes and expand sports opportunities nationwide.
Under Senate Bill No. 2167, aims to establish sports participation vouchers and financial assistance for budding athletes, especially those from low-income households and underserved communities.
It also proposes support for the development and improvement of local sports and recreational facilities to encourage youth participation. – Almira Louise S. Martinez
