The Astros designate a shortstop Nate Pearson for the assignment, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Roma added that striker Ray Delgado is in the team’s clubhouse, suggesting he has been sent back to Triple-A. With Pearson’s appointment, the Astros have three openings for the 40-man roster.
It’s surprising to see Pearson lose his roster spot. The righty made 16 appearances in Houston’s bullpen this year with a respectable 3.60 ERA. He was good at keeping the ball in the yard, allowing one home run in 20 innings. However, Pearson’s 19.0% strikeout rate and 14.3% walk rate are both below average, especially the walks. Meanwhile, his projected numbers suggest that Pearson should have an ERA in the mid-4.00’s, painting a picture of a decent, but flawed reliever.
