After the camera, the display, and the latest AI-powered features, perhaps the most important feature of the new phone is the battery. Each year, manufacturers boast of longer battery life and more capacity. lMeasured in mAh, a phone’s battery is an important factor for many consumers.

While it may be tempting to splurge on a phone with a bigger battery, a bigger mAh doesn’t guarantee you’ll be happy with the results. So what is mAh, why is it important, and why do today’s 6,000 mAh-plus phones struggle to last a day when your old 4,000 mAh phone lasts longer?

First, let’s define our goals.

What is mAh?

Without being too technical, mAh stands for milliampere hours, or how many milliamps of current a battery can provide for one hour. The larger the battery, the higher the mAh number, and the more power the battery can hold before it needs to be recharged.

Today’s phones are more powerful than ever, but they are also to do than ever before. The power required to keep modern smartphones moving around the world is higher than the phones of years past. Therefore, how much your phone’s battery holds is not the only factor in how long that battery will last, as a phone with a large battery usually comes with processes and features that drain that battery very quickly.

Your device’s processor, display, any software enhancements like battery saver, what apps you use, your phone’s refresh rate, battery age, and even temperature affect how quickly your phone uses available battery.

What is the best mAh in 2026?

Battery capacity is one case where the endless battle of Android vs Apple really matters. You will almost always see smaller battery capacity on iPhones, yet they work just as well as their larger capacity Android counterparts. In comparison, Apple makes less than 5,000 mAh while Android phones can reach 6,000 currently.

By 2026, around 5,000 mAh is the Android standard. A few years ago, this was the roof of batteries, but now it is the norm. Most modern smartphones use about 500 mAh per hour, so a 5,000 mAh battery gets you about 10 hours of use.

Given those figures, it means that if you’re looking at a phone with a larger battery in the 6,000 mAh or higher range, you’re only getting about one hour of use compared to a 5,000 mAh one. Less than 4,700 mAh

This will get you through the day’s scrolling and streaming, but if you’re playing games or taking photos or video, you’ll probably need to top it up before the end of the day. If you use your phone a lot as a communication device, you’ll be fine with this range.

4,700 to 5,500 mAh

Most of the best Android phones today like the Pixel 10 Pro and the Galaxy S26 come in around 5,000 mAh. If you want to use your phone for social media, live streaming, taking photos and videos, or other non-phone purposes, you’ll want a battery in this range.

6,000 mAh and above

Once you get to 6,000 mAh and above, you’re at the high end of current cell phone battery capacity. These phones either use new silicon-carbon batteries or are aimed at gamers who need high-end processors that eat up a ton of battery life. For casual users, a battery of this size may not make a big impact on daily use.

If you’re buying the latest phone for eye-popping battery capacity because your current phone doesn’t last all day, chances are you won’t see a huge improvement based on that alone. Changing the way you use your device and changing other settings is very important.

Also, some phones are more power hungry than others. Tablets and other large-screen devices, for example, boast the largest batteries on the market — but they also require more power than an older iPhone or flip phone with a relatively small battery. Eventually, phones with smaller batteries may overtake them.
