Your CD and Blu-Ray Collection Won’t Last Forever

It is important to be aware of disc degeneration, but there is no need to panic.
Every Blu-ray or CD collector has an origin story. Mine include Friday night rain, two buckets of Orville Redenbacher, and the futile search for Kevin Smith. Doctrine. Since then, I’ve found myself caught in the trap of trying to grow my viewing habits to counter the demands of multinational corporations like Amazon and Netflix. If you’ve ever found yourself in a similar battle, be aware: stocking up on physical media may not be as safe as you think, especially if you don’t take proper precautions. And while it may seem obvious that your CD collection won’t last if you don’t protect it, many consumers aren’t happy about the conditions that could tarnish their physical media.
One of the biggest dangers to your media collection is known as disc rot. And while it sounds like a disease you might catch while traversing the Amazon rainforest, something with a bad name poses serious risks to the integrity of your collection. Affecting CDs, Blu-rays and DVDs alike, disc decay occurs when environmental factors damage the light side of compact discs. Dots, holes and discoloration throughout the transparent layer can damage the data on the disc, potentially making it unreadable.
Before getting into the causes of disc degeneration, it is important to note that this condition is not common. As already mentioned, consumers should be aware of the dangers, signs and prevention strategies needed to protect their discs from unnecessary suffering. And although the disease is not contagious, owners who start to see signs of rust should act quickly to save their collections.
Symptoms and causes of disc degeneration
Disc decay occurs when a CD’s protective layers fail to protect its contents from environmental degradation. One such process, known as oxidization, occurs when oxygen reacts with the aluminum in your CD, causing a copper color to appear throughout your disc. Other tell-tale signs include a series of pins, holes, damaged edges or cloudy spots throughout. However, disk corruption is not always visible, and sometimes it may only be visible when you experience playback problems.
In general, this phenomenon is made worse by improper storage, when excessive exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity and direct sunlight distorts the visual layer of the discs, promoting chemical reactions that cause deterioration. For example, extreme cold can cause CD decay by condensing moisture on the disc and exposing the light layer to bad conditions. Moisture, on the other hand, can cause the glue that holds your disc together to loosen and separate. .
The risk of disc degeneration is higher in poorly made products. Cheaper discs are more likely to deteriorate and cannot hold up in rough environments. Bad cases are another matter, especially on DVDs. Laserdiscs, on the other hand, show their destructive ways, when the aluminum layers are oxidized by their adhesives, causing the discs to crack, the videos to skip and the sound to be damaged. How much such degradation occurs depends on the quality of the disc and its specific storage conditions.
Preventing disc degeneration
Fear not, disk decay is inevitable. Experts warn enthusiasts to consider how and where they store their disk collections. Of course, identifying the right storage conditions can be difficult, and often depends on the type of disc. However, a few general precautions can help protect your collection from unnecessary damage.
Store your discs inside cool, well-ventilated rooms and away from direct sunlight. Keeping discs in their individual storage containers can help reduce exposure. Some enthusiasts suggest that collectors store notebooks and other paper materials in a sleeve outside the case, as the paper can create moisture over time on the disc. However, such concerns are minor and will not have a major impact on most users. Importantly, the orientation of your storage unit makes little difference, with both vertical and horizontal storage systems having no measurable effect on disk decay. Airtight containers can help reduce contamination, but they won’t protect your CD from heat or minor damage and may exacerbate moisture concerns.
Try to prevent your collection from experiencing large temperature fluctuations. If you need to take a CD between two extremes, it is best to do so gradually. As with vinyl records, extreme temperature fluctuations can cause cracks or other damage to the disc’s protective layers. Leaving the disc in its packaging while it adapts, for example, can reduce this type of damage.
If you believe your collection may be suffering, there are several steps you can take to try to recover your content. First, look for software to recover data from damaged CDs or companies that specialize in data recovery from damaged discs. Creating more copies can also help reduce risks. Of course, copyright infringement laws prevent users from making a playable backup of their Blu-Ray collection, but saving home videos and photos to additional storage media is recommended. In addition, regular cleaning can help prevent dust, dirt and other environmental factors from spoiling your collection.
All in all, you probably don’t need to worry too much about disk corruption. Other types of damage, such as scratches, are more common and harmful to the contents of CDs. However, following common sense storage techniques can reduce your exposure and help preserve your collection for a long time.
