Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., said President Donald Trump is on the verge of ending his war goals in the war against Iran, during an interview with the “Ruthless Podcast.”

The former US Ambassador to Japan during Trump’s first term compared the current situation in the Middle East to President Harry Truman’s dismissal of General Douglas MacArthur during the Korean War.

“I think of Douglas MacArthur in Japan,” the senator said in an exclusive “Ruthless” interview that aired Tuesday morning.

“I was lucky enough to live in the same place he lived for six years where he lived. He killed the Korean War after the reconstruction of Japan. I often wonder what would have happened if Truman had not fired him, if MacArthur had been allowed to complete the difficult task,” he added. “We wouldn’t be dealing with a lot of the things we’re dealing with right now. And President Trump is going to end that bad job.”

Hagerty pointed to God’s entrustment in saving Trump’s life as a guiding force in how the administration is dealing with the current war.

“He just took me back to Sunday morning after President Trump was shot at Butler, [Pennsylvania],” Hagerty said. “I was on the phone with him for about 20 minutes. I told him he could be the most important president we’ve ever had, and I think he’s taken that mantle; he realizes, but for the grace of God he would not be here, and he is facing serious problems. He doesn’t hold back.”

“Ruthless” host Josh Holmes shared Hagerty’s concerns about Iran getting a nuclear weapon.

“I think what I’m most happy about President Trump’s decision to do is that he’s the first president to decide ‘I’m not going to leave it up to other administrations,'” Holmes said. “It’s going to get worse. It will continue to get worse. You will get October 7, you get the full funding of Hamas and Hezbollah. Who knows where it goes if they get a nuclear weapon and everything else. We already know their intentions. This is not something to be ignored.”

Hagerty is seeking re-election for the first time after winning the race for the open seat in 2020. No Democrat has won a US Senate race in Tennessee since Al Gore in 1990.

The interview took place as part of Ruthless Midterm Interview SeriesIt’s a step in the right direction to engage with great people across the country. Hosts have already interviewed candidates in 17 states, with more slated ahead of the November midterms.

The senator noted that the Democratic Party is moving rapidly to the left, especially on issues like Israel.

“[Senator] Bernie [Sanders (I-Vt.) is] instead of presenting himself as the leader of the Democratic Party,” said Hagerty. “Of course in the United States Senate, of course. And I don’t know who is in charge here in the house. If not [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez]you can tell me. But I think [House Minority Leader Hakeem] Jeffries doesn’t seem to bring any leadership. And if you look at Jeffries’ home country, it’s amazing how democratic socialists have taken over now. “
