MLB Mailbag: White Sox, Underachievers, Witt, Giants, Rangers, Rays

In this week’s MLB Mailbag, we’ll answer questions about the White Sox’s approach to the trade deadline, underperforming clubs in dire need of a rebuild, Bobby Witt Jr.Contract, other Giants trade scenarios and more. Thanks to everyone who submitted questions. Let’s get started!

Dennis asks:

For the specific need of a beginner vet and/or a vet reliever without overly damaging their test pool, who should [White Sox GM Chris] Are you calling first?

In fact, I’m not sure they need to worry about damaging the prospect pool too much. Granted, they don’t have to go through a lot of potential cash to rent Tarik Skubal again Freddy Peralta few months, but the White Sox roster looks solid all around. Miguel Vargas, Munetaka Murakami, Colson Montgomery, Sam Antonacci, Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth – this is a really good nucleus.

The pitching side is less impressive, but that could change if Noah Schultz and/or Hagen Smith find their stride. Davis MartinThe player’s explosiveness is surprising, but lately he has been like the Davis Martin of old after a few weeks of admirable indulgence. I can’t fully buy a flat 3.00 ERA, but if he’s a 3.75-ish guy, he’s one nice piece. Sean Burke was good but looks more like an average starter than someone who can get around the playoffs.

Chicago’s farm system is already a good one, and they have several position players now on the roster – not to mention the No. 1 pick in the upcoming MLB draft. That will add one more quality piece to the system.

Even if Murakami leaves after 2027 – and they can look to extend him – Vargas can slip into the starting position while Montgomery and the top prospects. Caleb Bonemer/Billy Carlson take the left side of the infield. (Or maybe a 1-1 pick Roch CholowskyThere’s just a lot to like about the status quo side of things – so much so that I’d encourage making a real push for the first several years now, even if it means sacrificing some farm depth.
