The suspension stems from an incident in Washington’s 8-1 win on Tuesday, when Cavalli hit Contreras in full court and yelled, “Sit down, boy.”

Contreras responded by charging the mound, then fired his helmet at Cavalli, emptying both the bullpen and the bullpen.

MLB also fined two players who left the dugout and were involved in a separate altercation.

Right-hander Miles Mikolas was suspended for five games, while Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton received a three-game suspension. Both players were also fined undisclosed amounts and sent off during the match.

All four suspensions are scheduled to begin on Friday.

The Red Sox open a three-game series in Anaheim on Friday, while the Nationals host the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Boston figures to feel the impact immediately. While Cavalli and Mikolas are likely to miss only one chance in the rotation, Contreras will be out of the Red Sox lineup for the rest of the week.

Cavalli apologized on Wednesday, saying he regrets using the word “boy” and now understands its historical weight. He went on to say that this incident kept him awake at night because of the example he wants to set for young fans. Nationals officials have also addressed this issue with the right.

Contreras, on the other hand, entered Tuesday’s game with an emotional concussion. The veteran first baseman was ejected last night for arguing over a test call and has spoken publicly about the stress of the devastating earthquake in his home country of Venezuela.
