Winkler fills out a senior junior infield depth that has been checked by several injuries. Jacob Wilson again Zack Gelof they went on the injured list during the last week. That was stressful Darrell Hernaiz and the rookie Joshua Kuroda-Grauer up from Triple-A. The A’s are also selected Brett Harris for the assignment on the weekend when they find something to help Hayden Juenger from the Blue Jays. They may be hoping Harris clears waivers and stays, but they won’t know that until later in the week.
The 27-year-old Winkler played in 14 major league games with the Marlins last year. OA is very familiar with him, having released him from the University of San Francisco in 2021. Winkler peaked at Double-A in his previous position in the organization. He spent the year in Triple-A with the Astros until he was released last week.
Winkler was hitting .184/.260/.306 over 227 plate appearances in the organization owned by Houston. He is a lifetime .228/.311/.342 hitter over six minor league seasons. He won’t provide offensively but can back up anywhere in the infield.
