Guardians Nominate Chris Paddack For Share

The Rangers announced that right-hander Gavin Colyer recalled to Triple-A Round Rock. In a corresponding motion, folks, it’s okay Chris Paddack selected for assignment.

Paddack quick change. The Rangers just signed him yesterday and it looks like they wanted him to start giving other staff a chance to breathe. Technically, Tyler Alexander He started yesterday’s game, even though he pitched just one inning in the opening game. Paddack then came in and went four innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out one batter. Texas was down 2-1 when Paddack finished the fifth but eventually came back to win 6-3.

With Paddack having exploded, Rangers clearly had one game in mind when they signed him. It was not an expensive signing. Paddack signed a $4MM deal with the Marlins this year and was later released. Miami is still holding onto that balance. Other clubs could sign Paddack and pay him the split league minimum for any time he spends on the roster, with that amount deducted from what the Marlins are paying. The Reds signed Paddack a few weeks after the Marlins released him, though they also moved on, leading to this very short stint in Texas.

He will likely be a free agent again in the coming days. He has enough service time to decline direct assignments and opt for free agency while keeping all of his salary commitments in place. Once he officially enters the market, he could see another club being attracted to his affordability and availability.

Paddack had an impressive rookie season back in 2019, posting a 3.33 earned run average in 140 2/3 innings. However, he hasn’t had much success since. Since the start of 2020, he has thrown 498 innings with a 5.26 ERA. His 5.3% walk rate is a strong number but he struck out 19.3% of the batters he faced. That strikeout rate has dropped significantly recently, as it was just 16.7% last year and sits at a 15% clip so far in 2026. Despite the hot numbers, various teams around the league have been hit hard by injuries and may need a live arm.
