Tigers Pick Ben Malgeri – MLB Trade Rumors

The Tigers selected the outfielder’s contract Ben Malgeri from Triple-A Toledo, according to the club’s announcement. A partner who plays outside Trei Cruz he was optioned to Toledo in his place, and a spot on the 40-man roster was opened by transferring the injured Burch Smith from 15-day IL to 60-day IL.

Malgeri, 26, was selected by Detroit in the 18th round out of the Northeast back in 2021. He’s never ranked among the top 30 league prospects in Baseball America, but you wouldn’t know that from looking at his 2026 numbers. He walked 297 times this season and hit an impressive .296/.401/.496 line with nine homers, 17 doubles, three triples, eight steals (in 10 attempts), a massive 12.8% walk rate and a 24.9% strikeout rate. He sports a 45% solid rate and an 11.2% barrel rate with the Mud Hens.

The addition of Malgeri gives the Tigers a good swing bat that can handle any of the three outfield spots. He split his time almost equally between right and left field this season while making six starts in center. Even though he hasn’t played a leading role this season, that has been a problem for the top players Max Clark – 3 overall picks from the 2023 draft and a 15-man consensus opportunity in every game. Malgeri has played more center field than outfield in his career prior to the 2026 season.

The Tigers have been putting things together in the middle position all season. Wounds are preserved Places to stay in Parker Meadows on the shelf most of the year, too Javier Baez he has been out since late April with an ankle injury. Both are on 60 day IL. Wenceel Pérez he spent a little time in between but also sidelined – in his case due to an orbital fracture. All these injuries lead to Matt Vierling taking plenty of reps this season, but struggling through the least productive offensive campaign of his career. Taking DFA James Outman he has seen others run through the middle recently, but has played 43.2% of the games between the three clubs since last season.

All of that would culminate in Malgeri getting the first major league appearance of his five-year professional career. Whether he sticks or is a short-term replacement will depend on his play and the health of Detroit’s outfield, but he’s moved into the position and will get a chance to make the most of those strong minor league numbers.
