The Mariners fired assistant hitting coach Bobby Magallanes on Thursday afternoon (link posted by Adam Jude of the Seattle Times). Minor league hitting coordinator Ed Paparella will join the big league staff at the end of the season.
Magallanes was in his second season on the Seattle staff. The M’s hired him in conjunction with their hiring of coach Kevin Seitzer for the 2024-25 offseason. Magallanes had been an assistant hitting coach under Seitzer for the past four seasons with the Braves. Edgar Martinez, executive director of the team’s offensive strategy, remains the leading voice of the organization. Martinez is in a bigger role than a full-time coaching position.
Seitzer remains in his position. Daniel Kramer of MLB.com writes that Magallanes was primarily vocal about mechanics, while Seitzer focused more on the offensive line. The Mariners had the best offense in the league in 2025, finishing behind the top 10 in scoring and OPS despite playing in one of the toughest home parks. Only the Yankees and Brewers scored more runs on the road than Seattle did last year.
The case disappeared this year. Only the Blue Jays scored fewer runs than the Mariners, who hit .229/.310/.377 to rank third-lowest in all three slash categories. This can’t be easily identified as T-Mobile Park. The Mariners are tied for 24th in road scoring. It’s a huge disappointment considering the amount of talent on the roster.
Raleighone year removed from one of the greatest seasons by a catcher in MLB history, he is hitting .163/.269/.304. Rookie player Colt Emerson he hit .189/.254/.360 in his first 51 games. Josh Naylor he was the league average hitter in the first season of a five-year, $92.5MM contract. JP Crawford it’s getting cold. Correct field/DH group incl Dominic Canzone, Luke Raley again Victor Robles they haven’t been productive lately. Seattle wasn’t there Brendan Donovan most of the season and lost Raleigh for a month between mid-May and June, but they were very healthy.
One coaching change won’t fix everything, but the M’s clearly need to do something to spark the offense. It is reported that they are open to dealing with them Emerson Hancockwhich would be a way to add a big bat. Even if Hancock stays put, they will bring in some type of right-handed bat to try to improve their anemic production against left-handed pitching. That might be more than just adding an everyday right fielder.
Parrella, 31, is joining the MLB staff for the first time in his career. He has spent the past five seasons in various player development roles. Parrella, a linebacker at the University of South Alabama from 2016-19, did not play well. He worked with Donovan and the Jaguars in his first three college seasons.
