James Carville blames Biden’s exit in late 2024 for damaging the Democratic Party

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville argued Sunday that former President Joe Biden’s refusal to withdraw from the 2024 election earlier caused lasting damage to his party.
“So, the reason the Democratic Party is in the state it’s in, is because Joe Biden wasn’t going to come out until July 21st of the election year, right?” Carville said on his “Politics War Room” podcast. “If Joe Biden had come out in October of 2023, we would have had a Democratic president. Don’t kid yourself.”
“So, all the people on the left who say the Democrats aren’t fighting hard enough never said anything about Biden running for re-election,” he continued. “None of them all crossed the line.”

Carville has previously spoken about how the Democratic Party and far-left identity politics cling to its reputation as a “smell”, as others in the party have tried to come out in the open.
But despite his advice and similar comments from the Democratic Alliance, the revolutionary wing of the Democratic socialists continued to hold sway in the party.
“I don’t know. I just don’t know,” he said when asked by CNN senior analyst Ron Brownstein about how Democrats should handle the growing party, as they try to distance themselves from the far-left positions of the past.
“I never thought I would see this. I’m having a little trouble getting used to it politically and personally,” said Carville.
Brownstein suggested there is a clear lesson to be drawn from 2026.
“If the center wants to win in ’28, they’re going to have to show two things: they’ve learned from the past, and they’re willing to fight the MAGA movement with all their might,” Brownstein said. “I don’t think ’26 proves that the left will win in ’28, but it does show that the center will have to fight to control the party.”

Although Carville is often critical of his party’s left wing, he pointed out that Democrats need a change.
“We lost because the people wanted an election for change, but we didn’t give it to them,” he said. “Now they’re saying after we did that, ‘Fight, fight!’ It’s great, it’s great, it’s amazing,” she said. “The fault of the Democratic Party right now, the reason we don’t have power, is that Biden got out of the race too late. And if there was any kind of choice, my personal opinion is that we would have won the thing, and it wouldn’t have been close.”
“I’m not sure the Democrats can win even if they come out,” Brownstein replied. “But there is no question that his stay reduced their chances.”
