Well… at least God of War Laufey gets a physical disc

Last week, Sony set the gaming community on fire by announcing that all new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onwards will be digital-only, effectively eliminating physical discs from future releases. At the same time, the company also confirmed that it will close the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita digital stores in July 2027, reinforcing concerns that digital stores and the games tied to them are not permanent. Unsurprisingly, the announcements caused widespread backlash from collectors and longtime PlayStation fans. In the midst of all that, Santa Monica Studio gave an incredibly comforting update: God of War Laufey will be available on disc. Only one sentence, but it says a lot.
More than just physical release
The confirmation came as part of Santa Monica Studio’s San Diego Comic-Con announcement, where the team revealed a God of War Laufey panel with Game Director Ariel Lawrence, Creative Head Cory Barlog, Deborah Ann Woll (who plays Laufey), Christopher Jaji, Jack Quaid, and Perlina Lau. While the panel promised backstory and a closer look at the game’s new heroes, it was a follow-up post that caught fans’ attention: “We can confirm that God of War Laufey will be available on disc.”
That confirmation comes at a time when virtual media has become one of the hottest talking points in sports. With Sony shutting down disc production of future PlayStation games and Rockstar recently confirming that physical editions of Grand Theft Auto 6 will simply include a download code in the box, collectors have become understandably nervous whenever the big title is announced.
There is another interesting detail hidden within that guarantee. God of War Laufey does not yet have an official release date – or release window. But if the game ships via physical disc, it likely means that Santa Monica Studio is targeting a launch before Sony’s January 2028 deadline for a new physical PlayStation release. Interestingly, industry projections are already pointing to an early 2027 release, likely in February or March. While Sony hasn’t confirmed that timeline yet, the disc announcement doesn’t contradict expectations.
Why is this important?
The throwback isn’t just about collectors looking for a plastic box on the shelf. It’s about ownership. Between Sony ending physical discs for future PlayStation games and preparing to close the PS3 and PS Vita digital stores next year, many gamers see this as proof that digital purchases and pre-orders may eventually disappear. That’s why the debates about saving, borrowing, trading, and being truly playful have been louder than ever.
Maybe that’s why this little assurance resonated so much. In any other year, “the game will be on disc” wouldn’t even qualify as news. In 2026, however, it is enough to convince collectors, the projection of the fuel release window, and be one of the biggest talking points around the God of War Laufey, all from one sentence in X.
