Trans athletes have filed lawsuits to gain access to girls’ sports in New Hampshire after the SCOTUS ruling

Two New Hampshire athletes dismissed their lawsuit challenging the state’s law protecting girls’ sports after the US Supreme Court’s landmark Title IX ruling on June 30.

The teenage plaintiffs, Parker Tirrell and Iris Turmelle, first filed a lawsuit in 2024 to challenge New Hampshire’s current state law that prohibits trans athletes from participating in girls’ sports. The case was later expanded to add President Donald Trump’s administration to the defendants after Trump signed the executive order “No Men in Women’s Sports” on Feb. 5, 2025.

Advocates for trans athletes say Trump’s order, and parts of the 20 Jan which prohibits federal funds from being used to “promote gender stereotypes,” subjects transgender youth and all transgender girls to discrimination that violates federal equal protection guarantees and their rights under Title IX.

The US District Court for the District of New Hampshire then ruled last year that female athletes represented by attorneys from the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) were allowed to intervene in the case to defend the state’s women’s sports law and administrative rules.

Now, after the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling, upholding state laws guaranteeing that only women can compete in girls’ sports, there is no place for teenagers to fight the law in New Hampshire.

“Women and girls deserve privacy, safety, and equal opportunity. That won’t happen if men compete in women’s sports, take spots on women’s sports teams, and win women’s championships,” said ADF Senior Counsel and Vice President of Litigation Strategy Jonathan Scruggs in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.

“President Trump’s directives and the New Hampshire law are common sense and follow Title IX, the federal law that guarantees equal opportunities for women in athletics. We are thankful that this case is coming to an end and that New Hampshire is free to protect its female athletes.”

Fox News Digital contacted attorneys for Tirrell and Turmelle at GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) for a response.

SCOTUS decisions in West Virginia v. BPJ and Little v. Hecox, the high court upheld state laws that require student-athletes to compete on sports teams that match their natural sex at birth rather than their gender identity, in a 6-3 decision.

However, there are still 23 states, including California, New York and Massachusetts, that do not have such laws, and some of those have laws protecting transgender athletes in girls’ sports.
