iOS 27 finally put an end to my accidental voicemail woes

If you’ve ever hit the record button on Messages and sent an unintended voice note, you know the kind of panic that follows. I’ve done it more times than I’d like to admit, and if it wasn’t for the “Undo Send” feature, I’d have been in some really embarrassing situations.

It usually happens when I’m invoking the keyboard by tapping inside a text field as my fingers accidentally brush over that little record icon. Or sometimes an accidental tap while I’m waiting for a response ends up sending a recorded voice without me noticing.

Thankfully, iOS 27 finally gives us a way to make this problem disappear once and for all.

Why is this going on in the first place?

If you’ve ever wondered why this button seems to hit all the time, it comes down to two things. First, the audio recording icon sits next to the text field, where your thumb rests naturally.

Second, it’s the same place as the Send button, so our muscle memory also makes it easier to hit. In iOS 27, I noticed that you now need to tap and hold to start recording, which is already better than iOS 26, which started an audio message with just a tap.

But to make sure it doesn’t happen, I still prefer to remove the audio message button altogether. Here’s how you do it.

How do you turn off the recording sound button?

Apple has added a simple toggle to the Messages settings that lets you control what appears to the right of your text field. To access it:

Step 1: Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down.

Step 2: Tap on Apps and open Messages to open the message settings.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap on the “Show in text field” settings.

You will be greeted with three options: Record Audio, Start Calling, or Nothing. Choose None to completely remove the audio record button, so there’s nothing left for your thumb to accidentally hit.

Should you choose to call instead?

If you still want quick access to voice input but don’t want an audio recording button anywhere near your keyboard, the switch to Start Calling is a good middle ground. Reporting has gotten a lot better with the new Siri AI, so it’s a solid choice. You find a way to call out messages without the risk of firing off a random recorded voice to whoever sent you the message.

For me, however, There is no way I should go. I rarely use voice messages anyway, and the call button is on the bottom right of the keyboard when I need it. Removing the button completely means I no longer need to worry about any error voice messages.

It’s a small change, but the kind of quality-of-life adjustment that makes a real difference when you know it’s there. If you’ve ever sent an error voice message and hung up immediately after, do yourself a favor and update this setting today.
