Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 series may erase its big eyes by weakening its best folding angles.

If you’ve ever tried a foldable smartphone, you may have noticed that ugly crease in the middle. And if you’ve used it for a while, you’ve probably learned to ignore it. Oppo was the first to change this with a near creaseless experience on its Find N6. Rumors even point to the upcoming iPhone Fold also offering a similar design.

But it looks like Samsung has greatly reduced this feature over several generations of the Galaxy Z Fold. The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 series could be the first to make it hard to find. Tipster Ice Universe claims that Samsung has redesigned the hinge on both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, producing a “high-end” crease function comparable to the Oppo Find N6. The improvement is reported to surpass what Samsung achieved in the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Apart from the prices, the annoying crease is also the main reason why many people stop trying to curl.

How Oppo gave Samsung a very high bar

The Oppo Find N6 is an obvious comparison because it currently sets the standard. Its large internal screen has a crease that is almost impossible to see during normal use and is invisible under the finger. That improvement changes more than looks. The shallow crease creates less distracting glare in all videos and games, gives text a uniform background, and eliminates the slight dip that crosses your finger while scrolling.

Once Samsung reaches the same level, Oppo loses one of its clear hardware advantages. Samsung will combine that smooth display with its wide availability, mature software for multitasking, a long-term renewal commitment, and strong retail support.

A redesigned hinge may bring a trade-off

Samsung’s rumored hinge update could change the way the phone behaves at slightly bent angles. Ice Universe says the opening and closing action is more deliberate, although the new Fold models may have trouble holding some of the positions supported by previous generations. That could affect Flex Mode, which allows users to turn on the phone for hands-free photo capture, video calls, media controls, and split-screen layouts.

How important that consistency becomes will depend on which angles remain stable. Most owners will likely appreciate the incredibly smooth internal display over the hidden hinge position, though Flex Mode remains one of Samsung’s most useful folding features.

Both models of the Fold 8 are said to benefit

Previous rumors have raised concerns that Samsung might keep its best crease reduction technology for the pricier Fold 8 Ultra. This leak says that both models get a redesigned hinge and an almost invisible fold line. Consumers shouldn’t need a more expensive version to avoid looking down the drain in the middle of their tablet screen.

Samsung has yet to confirm the Fold 8 model or its hinge technology, so the claims still need to survive an official launch and hands-on testing.
