House Democrats dodge questions about Supreme Court ruling on sports

House Democrats have largely questioned the Supreme Court’s ruling that now allows states to bar student-athletes from competing on sports teams or leagues that match their gender rather than their natural sex.
“I think we spend too much time thinking about that,” Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., told Fox News Digital when asked his opinion on the decision. “And what people should be focusing on right now is the dysfunction here in Washington.”
“I think the focus should be on the economy and getting us out of this war of choice and lowering gas prices so people don’t have to make real decisions about whether they’re going to put food on their table or gas in their tank, take their kids to the hospital or school,” said Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Calif.,

He continued, “I think the culture wars that we allow to divide us are doing nothing to feed our children.”
The Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision marked a major victory for supporters of laws barring transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports, upholding state laws challenged by transgender athletes who argued the policies violated the Constitution.
But when asked about the landmark decision, several House Democrats either didn’t know about the decision or preferred to talk about what they see as more important issues like the economy and dysfunction in Congress.
“This place is a disaster,” McGovern said. “And, you know, not knowing here… I’ve never seen this before.”
“I think what people should focus on is that Washington is dysfunctional, and it’s really sad.”

Despite the decision that left the decision to the states instead of a nationwide ban, Rep. Seth Magaziner, DR.I., said that this issue should be dealt with at the grassroots level and even below – locally.
“We love you school sports associations, parents, why should people at home level decide what sports and what age group should be included or what the rules should be.
Like several of his Democratic colleagues, Magaziner quickly shifted the conversation to broader issues that he said Congress should prioritize.

“Obviously, I don’t like to think that this is something that politicians in Washington should be involved in,” said the Magaziner. “We should be focusing on reducing inflation, focusing on ending the war, focusing on preserving our democracy.
“Congress should focus on bigger things,” he added.

Rep. Sarah Elfreth, D-Md., was among the few Democrats to offer direct criticism of the decision, calling it “unfortunate.”
“It’s unfortunate for a lot of people across the country,” Elfreth said. “Like I said, they didn’t get much today.”
